When reading any crochet patterns (not just amigurumi patterns) you need to determine whether the stitch abbreviations are US or UK/Australian. Why? Because they use the same names to describe entirely different stitches! The amigurumi patterns I have seen typically use US abbreviations, and even though I am Australian I have gotten used to using US abbreviations as well.
Here is a chart to help you understand the different names used for the same stitches:
US Term | UK/Australian Term |
chain (ch) | chain (ch) |
slip stitch (sl st) | slip stitch (sl st) (sl) older patterns: single crochet (sc) |
single crochet (sc) | double crochet (dc) |
half double crochet (hdc) | half treble (htr) |
double crochet (dc) | treble (tr) |
triple crochet (trc) | double treble (dtr) |
And here are some other crochet terms that vary slightly between the countries:
US Term | UK/Australian Term |
fasten off | cast off |
skip/ skip over | miss |
gauge | tension |
yarn over (yo) | yarn over hook (yoh) |

hi ive js started crocheting a hand puppet n they using an abbreviation tbl cud u help im lost
See if you can talk to the creator of the pattern to get more details, but I imagine “tbl” = “treble”. If you look at some of the pages I have linked on my “amygurumi” page you should be able to find step-by-step techniques and helpful videos. Good luck!
Would you be able to tell me, either from the picture or the pattern given, if we are talking US stitches or UK ones in this pattern please? Thanks. http://www.redheart.com/free-patterns/rickrack-rainbow-baby-blanket
Hi sorry to butt in but the pattern is using US terms. Good luck 🙂 looks like a beautiful blanket
what is meant by “magic circle”? also, does not give how many chain stitches for the circle
best description may be to look up “magic loop” crochet on Youtube.com; it is a very simple method for beginning a circle, that does not involve a chain. The idea is to make only one chain loop from the slip knot, then work your first round of stitches into it – the video demonstrations are easier to understand than words. Good luck
The magic circle (loop) is made at the beginning, and after the stitches are made into the ‘hole’ – the end of tail is pulled and, when done correctly, the hole closes.
Thank you! I just started making a baby rug from an online purchase pattern and was terribly confused. It was saying DC but to me it was a treble!
Is it ok if I reference this post on my website??
I am trying to make a swarm of crochet Bees, but only familiar with UK crochet terms, so making loads of mistakes,I need to have a clear dictionary of UK terms versus other (usually US) terms if possible please,so that I can translate my Pattern
Thank you so much for this, was totally confused. I see clearly now.
thank you so much this is very helpful. I used to page back in the books I used for abbreviations constantly
I watched a YouTube video of a woman’s tutorial (tut) for making a lovely flower.
3 of us noticed that her sc was done by yo and pull through 1 loop, yo and pull through next loop. I am pretty sure that a sc is done by yo and pull through both loops on needle. Comments VERY welcomed!! Please!
Thank you!
Could tbl mean through back loop? When you look at a stitch there are 2 edges and the front loop is furthest from you and the back loop is nearest to you. Hope this may help.
Could you please show how to do” 1tr in next tr ” . I’m not really good with crochet terms.
Thanks
Thanks for this explanation, I have two crochet books and they have different instructions for the same stitches – I was getting very confused!
Conversion to Brazilian pictorial stitches would also be welcome.
What about the rest of Europe? Do their crochet stitch names conform to UK or to US names?
